For anyone waiting to feel ready.
Let me ask you the same thing I asked a room full of emerging leaders not long ago:
How many of you have ever felt like everyone else has it figured out except you?
Be honest. Because I'll go first.
I spent years thinking leaders looked different than me. Talked different. Came from somewhere different. And I'll tell you something I don't always say out loud: even now, there are rooms I walk into where a small voice still asks whether I belong. Twenty years in, degrees on the wall, a seat at the table, and the voice still shows up.
Here's what I've learned about that voice. It's normal. Everybody has one. But left alone, self-doubt has a way of turning into self-sabotage. You talk yourself out of the raise, the role, the idea, the room, before anyone else ever gets the chance to. So the first real act of leadership isn't some bold move. It's just naming the fear out loud, so it stops running the show from the back seat.
And then comes the part nobody tells you.
We all think it goes: get confident, then act. Feel ready, then raise your hand. Wait until the doubt clears, and then you'll make your move.
It doesn't work that way. It never has.
Confidence rarely shows up first. Courage does. You move first, before you feel ready, while your hands are still a little shaky, and confidence comes walking up behind you once you've proven to yourself that you can. Courage is the down payment. Confidence is the return. You don't get the return until you make the payment.
I know that's true because every good thing in my life is on the other side of a moment I didn't feel ready for. Taking the job I wasn't sure I could do. Speaking up in a room where I assumed everyone was smarter. Moving my family across the world for a role I'd never done before. I wasn't confident walking into any of those. I was scared. I went anyway. The confidence showed up later, every time, but only because I moved first.
So here's what I want you to do, and I mean today, not someday.
Think of the one thing fear has stopped you from trying. You already know what it is. It came to mind before I finished the sentence. Don't wait to feel ready for it, because that day isn't coming. Take one step toward it while you're still nervous. Then another. That's not recklessness. That's how it's actually done.
Because leadership was never something you were born into. It's something you're being built into, right now, in the ordinary rooms and hard days most people don't even count. You don't need permission, and you don't need to feel ready. You just need to decide to build.
Some of you are going to become leaders your younger self would not believe. I really mean that. And it won't be because you were born for it.
It'll be because, one scared step at a time, you built it.
